I don't train for how I look now. I worked that out a while ago.

What I'm actually after is further out. I want to carry my own bags through an airport at 70. Take the stairs without thinking about it. Get down on the floor with a grandkid and get back up on my own. Be the one who helps load the car, not the one who waits in it.

None of that is dramatic. No one posts about it. But it's the whole reason. The lifting, the walks, the same plain meals, all of it is a down payment on staying capable long after it would have been easy to let it go.

The standard underneath it: train for who I'll need to be in thirty years, not who's in the mirror today. The mirror is a side effect. Capability is the point.

That's what the quiet work is buying. Not a look. A few more decades of doing things myself.
